So what's the difference between bands and frequencies?
![]() ![]() The smaller picture on the right is an enlarged section of the band map just covering the 80M band. There are some key things in the picture. 1.The green sections are phone (voice, in ham-speak) and image.2.The red areas are where RTTY and data are allowed. 3.The white background containing a sine wave defines the portion of the band where CW (Morse Code) is allowed. 4.The initials vertically arranged along the right side of the map show which rows describe which type of license; 'T' for Technician, 'G' for General, 'E' for Extra, and two legacy licenses, Novice and Advanced. 5.The more area in the row, the more of the band that type of license can access. The numbers are the frequencies (in MegaHertz for this example) at the extreme edge of the band limits. 6.The 200W means Novices and Technicians are only allowed to use 200 watts of transmit power. It may not seem like much, but that is potentially capable of very long range using CW. On a related note, amateurs are 'limited' to using 1500W on all bands except for certain specific limitations. These will be good to know on the exams. Not many limitations, but there are a few. Radio Bands and Frequency Assignments
