Ham Sticks
"Ham Sticks" as Dipole - Review I bought 2 each 20M and 40M used and apparently Shark brand "hamsticks" at the Belton hamfest a couple of years ago. I mounted the 40M sticks onto a dipole mount and took a few minutes tuning with a RigExpert AA35 Zoom to get the SWR down to about 1.6 at 7.250MHz. The SWR jumped around a lot as I moved the coax, the interaction with the partially metal pole was obvious. Note to self: go fiberglass next time. The dipole was aimed more or less East. I attached it to my FT-991A and started scanning 40M. The first voices were a daily net at 7.240 and one operator mentioned a home base in Georgia. Signal was very clear with a reasonable noise floor. Second hit was at 7.212 with 6-8 operators who seemed to be in East Texas specifically mentioning College Station and Houston. Signal quality was excellent, most sounded like they were sitting on the patio with me. The third hit was at 7.208 and involved operators in Oklahoma and NE Texas. I did not rotate the antenna to improve the signal, and the audio was a little more challanging to dig out of the noise for some participants. The next day's experiment used the same dipole mounted to a 2x2. Prototyping a potential mount for an upcoming RV trip I attached the pole to the trailer's ladder. One stick was over the RV (with the air conditioner running) and the other end overlapped the house's roof by a few feet. I managed to find the 7.208 guys again, but the elevated noise floor (likely due to the AC two feet away) made several members impossible to understand. Next time, raise the antenna and get it away from the AC. Yagi / Logarithmic
